The 20th edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup culminated in historic fashion yesterday, with Serbia clinching their first global title as an independent nation. Yet this was merely the latest statistic to crop up in an event full of unusual occurrences, as FIFA.com's end-of-tournament review reveals.

154 goals were scored across New Zealand 2015's 52 games - the fourth-highest in FIFA U-20 World Cup history.

118 minutes of the final had passed when Serbia's Nemanja Maksimovic popped up with his title-winning strike. In doing so, he scored the latest goal ever seen in a U-20 World Cup final. This was typical of a Serbia side who specialised in late goals and had to work hard for their historic triumph, with all four of their knockout matches going to extra time.

50 per cent of penalties taken during normal time at this U-20 World Cup were either missed or saved. That unusually high ratio - made up of nine failed attempts from 18 overall - was established on the final day when Falaye Sacko and Malick Niang became the latest players thwarted from 12 yards.

28 goals - an incredible average of seven per game - were served up during the four matches played on 1 June 2015, setting a new record for a single matchday at the U-20 World Cup. The previous record, established on 22 February 1989, was 27 - but that tally had been accrued over eight matches.

28 years without a win at the U-20 World Cup: that was the statistic with which eventual champions Serbia began the tournament. Even that previous victory had come under the banner of Yugoslavia, with Serbia having never competed at this tournament as an independent nation. Rewriting those statistics in some style would, of course, become their mission.

20 matches undefeated was the new tournament record Brazil set before surrendering it 118 minutes into their final against Serbia. The Brazilians had strung together 14 wins and six draws over a period of eight years, dating back to their previous defeat: a 4-2 reverse to Spain in 2007 - also in extra time. Furthermore, Serbia succeeded in ending Rogerio Micale side's run without conceding in an impressive 572 minutes, with Stanisa Mandic the first player to score against them in the knockout phase.

19 U-20 World Cup matches without defeat was the then-record streak that Argentina surrendered against Ghana during the group phase. It proved to be a miserable tournament for the record six-time champions, who fell at the first hurdle having picked up just two points - their second-worst points tally ever recorded at the U-20 finals.

9 of the knockout matches went to extra time and five all the way to penalties - both new records for the U-20 World Cup.

8 U-20 World Cup titles have now been won by European sides, narrowing the historical gap with South America to three. Nonetheless, Argentina and Brazil - with 11 crowns combined - have still won this tournament more often than the rest of the world put together.

8-1 was the scoreline that Germany racked up against Fiji in the teams' opening match. This ranked as the Europeans' biggest-ever win at the U-20 World Cup and went in at joint-fourth in the wider all-time list, which remains topped by Brazil’s 10-0 trouncing of Belgium in 1997.

6 second-half goals against Myanmar saw Ukraine equal the competition record for the most goals scored by a team in a single period, not to mention achieving their country's biggest-ever win in a FIFA competition. Curiously, all ten of the Ukrainians' goals at New Zealand 2015 were scored in the second half.

3 unanswered goals against Honduras gave Fiji, in just their second attempt, an unlikely first win at a FIFA tournament. It was the first win by an OFC nation at the U-20 World Cup in 12 years, with 14 defeats and five draws having passed since Australia (then an OFC member) beat Brazil in 2003.

3 penalties were saved in a single shootout by Senegal's Ibrahima Sy, equalling the record set by Hungary’s Peter Gulacsi against Czech Republic in 2009.

0 wins in 11 attempts at the U-20 World Cup was the run that came to a spectacular end for New Zealand in their concluding group phase match against Myanmar. The Junior All Whites not only became the first New Zealand side to net five goals in a competitive FIFA match, but also reached the knockout phase at this tournament for the first time.
